This summer, due to the abnormal heat, the berry ripened faster and therefore the harvest of many varieties was significantly shifted. For example, while in previous seasons such varieties as Duke, Bluecrop, and Bluegold were harvested separately, this year the harvest time has not only shifted, but also coincided with each other, which has led to certain adjustments: revising the harvesting rate, storage, sales, and logistics.

There are so many berries on the markets and in the shops that your eyes can’t keep up, but which ones are good?

First of all, when choosing blueberries, look at the berries themselves: they should be firm, not crumpled or stuck, and not leak juice. Also, one of the main signs of a fresh berry is a waxy coating. If it is not present, this indicates that the berry is not fresh or has been stored in the wrong conditions.

But if you have already chosen blueberries, remember that at the right temperature, washed berries can be stored for up to two days, so it is better to wash the amount of blueberries you plan to eat at a time.

In recent weeks, wholesale prices for blueberries have fallen significantly on the Ukrainian market. This is due to the abnormally early start of the season for many berry farms. Of course, this creates both certain challenges for farmers and new opportunities for individual producers and traders. Blueberry exporters are already planning new export routes to EU countries bypassing Poland to avoid new artificially created barriers for Ukrainian berries on its borders.

Experts predict that the global sea buckthorn market will continue to grow. Five years ago, its total market was estimated at USD 1.4 billion, but according to forecasts, this figure will reach USD 2.4 billion in 2027.

In Ukraine, the trend towards the development of industrial sea buckthorn plantations is fuelled by consistently high purchase prices. And the production of this berry increased by almost a third between 2019 and 2022. Currently, European varieties predominate in the plantings, but some farms also use varieties of domestic breeding.

Last year, Ukraine exported an all-time record amount of blueberries abroad – more than 4,000 tonnes. of the berries.

Due to the war and border blockades, exports to Poland, which used to be the main buyer of Ukrainian blueberries, have declined. However, we managed to increase supplies to other countries: Germany, the Netherlands, Spain and a number of other EU countries. In addition, exports to the UK, which is one of the top four markets, grew by 11%.

The beginning of summer can be felt everywhere. More and more summer fruits, berries and vegetables are available in markets and shops. However, this season’s first Ukrainian blueberries are more than a third more expensive than last year. While last year the price of the first berry was three hundred hryvnias, this year we can see prices averaging 500 and even 700 hryvnias per kilo.

Of course, closer to the middle of summer, the price goes down. This year, however, much will depend on how blueberry farms survive the spring frosts.

Patriot is another blueberry variety grown by Eco-Park Agricultural Company.

It is a cold-resistant variety that produces stable, early-ripening yields of large berries and has the ability to adapt to different soil types. In addition, it is also a long-lived variety that, with proper care, can bear fruit for almost 100 years.

Patriot is a highly productive variety (yields from 4.5-6 to 9 kg per bush), but it is prone to thickening and overloading the crop, so it is important to thin out the shoots and intensify pruning to avoid reducing the size of the berries.

The Patriot berries themselves are light blue in color and have a very pleasant taste, perfect for fresh consumption, as well as for desserts, pastries, jams and preserves.
